NEXT EVENT: FRIDAY 16TH MAY @ 19.30 in the Cranbrook School Lecture Theatre
“The physics of superconducting magnets in MRI Scanners” by Dr Owen Taylor
“The Siemens Healthineers’ Magnet Technology facility in Oxford is a hub of innovation, producing around 1,800 superconducting magnets each year for MRI systems worldwide. These devices operate at incredibly cold temperatures of -269°C while handling enormous magnetic forces, creating the powerful, precise fields needed for MRI scanning. The technology allows doctors to see detailed images of soft tissues, fluids, and body processes with amazing clarity, revolutionising how medical conditions are diagnosed. The presentation will cover both the engineering at the Oxford facility and Siemens Healthineers’ important goal of making MRI technology available to more people around the world, as currently half the global population still cannot access this vital diagnostic tool.”
Dr Owen Taylor was a student at Cranbrook, he is now a Senior Key Expert at Siemens Healthineers with a background in superconductivity and cryogenics, and will be presenting on the technology behind modern medical imaging.
We are an astronomy and science society, based in a purpose-built observatory building at Cranbrook School in Kent.
We are now running lectures in person again in the School Lecture Theatre. Check the Events Page for details.
New members of all ages and experience are very welcome, so please contact us to find out more.
